Data Center Networks: Inventory

DCN ARCHITECTURE

It is becoming more desired to design a high through, low latency and low power DCN from architectural perspective. Frist, we studied the power efficient architecture for electrical switches for greening DCNs, which explored the power saving opportunities holistically from function level, node elvel and network level. In addition, we addressed the problems for optical DCNs. By removing MEMS from the design, we presented a new architecture outperforming previous optical DCNs by up to 4 times.

DCN TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

We investigated traffic management leveraging the DCNs features introduced by their unique architecture and applications. For example, to solve the long-lived congestion in DCN caused by over-subscription and unbalanced workload, we explored the opportunity to address the continuous congestion via optimizing Virtual Machine (VM) placement, or/and routing over diverse DCN paths or/and rate limiters at senders.

AUTOMATIC DCN OPERATION

The operations on a large-scale data center have been more and more complicated and error-prone. We were seeking automatic configuration and diagnosis method with the presence of malfunctioning switches.
